Loss of heating or cooling:

This section deals not with a loss of cooling or heating due to a power outage, but rather loss due to the system not functioning properly.  Although such occurrences are rare there have been occasions when the system failed.

Action

If the air conditioning system fails, instructors should open the classroom doors and as necessary prop open the exterior doors to facilitate air flow.  The campus has a number of fans that can be used in the classrooms as well.  Classes should not be cancelled or dismissed early merely because it is unpleasant or because of complaints.  If the instructor determines that the lack of air flow could result in an unsafe condition or that it creates a health hazard then the class should be dismissed early or cancelled.

If the heating system fails, instructors should be flexible in permitting students to wear additional clothing in the classroom to remain warm. Under no circumstances will small space heaters be permitted in a classroom or any form of open flame.  Classes should not be cancelled or dismissed early merely because it is unpleasant or because of complaints.  If the instructor determines that the cooler air temperature could result in an unsafe condition or that it creates a health hazard then the class should be dismissed early or cancelled.
