Fire Preparedness: Equipment and Testing

Wayland’s fire alarms and sprinkler systems are checked and tested regularly.

Actions in the event of a Fire:

Call 911 immediately, from outside the building if possible.

Learn to Stop, Drop, and Roll if clothes catch fire. Use the stairs (not elevators) to escape. If possible, cover mouth with a cloth to avoid inhaling smoke and gases. Close doors in each room after escaping to delay the spread of the fire.

If you are one the alert notification roster maintained through Chubb's Security and Monitoring Service, then you may receive a call during non-office hours should a fire alarm be triggered.  Generally Chubb's will make such calls to inform the staff on the alert roster that there is a system problem which usually means the power has gone off and triggered the alarm.  However if the alarm is triggered by a fire signal then they will have already notified the fire department prior to calling the staff on the notification roster.  The Live Oak Fire Department has jurisdiction of the San Antonio Campus.

Such a fire alarm has been since we have been at this location.  Fortunately it was not a fire but a faulty fire alarm which was triggered when the building shifted and shorted the wires on the alarm.

If there is fire or a fire alarm during the normal work day, the senior member of the Crisis Management Team available on site at the time will order the building evacuated and call 911

If there is fire or fire alarm after normal work hours, the senior member of the Crisis Management Team available on site at the time or the Security Guard will order the building evacuated and call 911.  In the absence of the Security Guard any instructor on site will order the evacuation and call 911

No one will be permitted to reenter the building until it is determined safe by the Fire Department.
