Building Shutdown Plan:

In the event of a natural disaster or civil defense preparedness it may become necessary to shutdown the campus buildings for a prolonged period.  A prolonged period is defined as one month or longer.

Shutdown due to Natural Disaster – In the event of a natural disaster all classes will be suspended for an indefinite period or cancelled depending on the severity of the threat at the determination of the Dean.  The Assistant Dean, acting in the capacity of Facility Manager, will arrange for suspension of or cancellation of all classes and alert the Notification Team to disperse that information via all means available to students, staff and faculty.  The Assistant Dean will take measures if time permits and the threat warrants to shut down all utilities to the building, and arrange for the boarding of windows and doors to the best means possible to prevent looting.  All electronic equipment should be moved away from windows and doors as far as possible and elevated off of the floor to help protect them in the event of window blow out from winds, hail and rain.  Once the State and Country Offices of Emergency Services have determined that we are permitted to return to the building to assess damages, only the Crisis Management Team members will make the assessment.  Students, staff, and faculty should not return to the building until the Notification Team advises them to return.

Shutdown due to Civil Defense – In the event of a Civil Defense alert all classes will be suspended for an indefinite period if not cancelled.  In this scenario war is either eminent or we have been attacked.  Most likely the war in this scenario will be with weapons of mass destruction making any resemblance of normal campus life impossible.  The Assistant Dean, acting in the capacity of Facility Manager, will arrange for suspension of or cancellation of all classes and alert the Notification Team to disperse that information via all means available to students, staff and faculty.  The Assistant Dean will take measures if possible and if time permits to shut down all utilities to the building and arrange for the boarding of windows and doors to the best means possible to prevent looting.  Once the State and Country Offices of Emergency Services have determined that we are permitted to return to the building to assess damages, only the Crisis Management Team members will make the assessment.  Students, staff, and faculty should not return to the building until the Notification Team advises them to return.
