Baptist Health Foundation renews, increases scholarship gift to Wayland’s San Antonio campus

San Antonio, Tex. (Apr. 25, 07) – Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio announced a $60,000 scholarship gift for the 2007-2008 academic year to the San Antonio campus of Wayland Baptist University. The funds will be available for local students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Christian Ministry and Master of Arts in Counseling degree programs. The gift is a $10,000 increase over last year.

“These scholarships enable the Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio to fulfill our mission of improving the health of our community by fostering and funding clinical, educational, spiritual and scientific initiatives while honoring God and our Baptist heritage,” Frank Elston, President and CEO of the foundation, said in the announcement letter.

Almost all of our first class of nursing students benefited from the scholarships in the 2006-2007 school year, according to Dr. Diane Frazor, Wayland’s nursing director. Each scholarship was enough to cover most of the cost of the new RN to BSN program that began at Wayland last August.

“The Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio has been one of our greatest supporters, and these scholarships have been key to helping us start our nursing program and bring great students to Wayland,” Dr. Jim Antenen, Dean at the San Antonio campus said.

Two scholarships were added to go to students in the Master’s of Christian Ministry program, and two were added for the Master of Arts in Counseling degree. Each scholarship is worth $5,000. The nursing program will again have ten new scholarships in the fall.

Students who qualify must reside in Bexar County or the seven surrounding counties, according to the foundation’s service area. Applications are available now for students entering in the fall.

Wayland Baptist University’s campus in San Antonio has offered affordable associates, bachelors and masters degrees in business, education, and Christian ministry for more than 20 years and enrolls more than 1,300 students. Class locations for Wayland include the main campus at I-35, and at Fort Sam Houston, Lackland and Randolph Air Force Bases.
