CATALOG DESCRIPTION - Theory and Practice of Supervision with emphasis on skills and techniques to facilitate maximum productivity in various kinds of organizations.

 

 

TEXT:            Supervision, Concepts & Practice of Management, 8h Edition, Raymond L. Hilgert and Edwin C. Leonard, Jr. South-Western College Publishing, 2000.

 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES.  The basic objectives of this course are to provide the student with the framework of supervisory concepts, the role of supervisors in society and the work place, and the various factors that influence supervisors on a daily basis.  It is expected that you will gain a solid understanding of the decisions facing the supervisor in areas such as business practices, morale behavior, motivation and the many roles expected of Him/Her.  Within this framework, general learning objectives include: identifying the management functions, understanding the tools of decision making, develop an overview of the supervisor's role in the organization, and identify current problems, issues and trends faced by supervisors.

 

 

CLASS PARTICIPATION: Wayland University’s Attendance Policy: “Any student who misses 25 percent or more of the regularly scheduled class meetings will receive an F in the course.  Students will be responsible for reading the assigned text material prior to each class.  Class discussions will be related to the chapters and other materials assigned for each week. 

 

 

GRADING:            Three (3) exams will be given and consist of multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions.  Each exam will count 25% for a total of 75%.  2 article reviews (5%) for a total of 10%. Research paper- 10%.  Class participation-attendance 5 %. = 100%

 

Makeup exams are the students' responsibility and should be completed within one week of the exam.  A copy of the exam will be available at the Wayland Baptist University office and can be taken during normal business hours.

ACQUIRED STUDENT COMPETENCIES: We will direct special attention to discuss the management functions of recruiting, selecting, training, appraisals, counseling, leadership, and communication.  We will also examine problem solving, dealing with conflict and change, unions, as well as other relevant topics.
