Attendance: Class attendance is required. The University will be notified after 2 absences. If you are going to be absent for any reason, please call me and let me know in advance. Class attendance, excused or not, effects your Class Participation grade.
Goal: This course will introduce the student to the scientific study of the ocean and will allow the student to acquire an understanding of how science works as a process of inquiry and testing of ideas.
Text: Oceanography A View of Earth, 7th edition, M. Grant Gross and Elizabeth Gross.
Exams: There will be 2 exams midterm and final. The test questions will be in the form of multiple choice, true/false, matching, short answer, and essay or any combination of these.
Final: The final will not be comprehensive. The format will be the same for both exams.
Research paper: A Research paper required. A handout will be handed out giving the expectations for this paper. Approval of your topic choice is required, as well.
Presentation: You will be required to give an oral presentation on your research paper. A list of topics will be given out. The dates of the presentations will be assigned. The presentation should be no less than 5 minutes and no more than 8 minutes in length, allowing for class questions and discussion after your presentation. Five points will be deducted from you presentation for each 30 seconds over 8 minutes.
Participation Grade: At the conclusion of each presentation, students are expected to join in a discussion as to the relevance of the subject presented. I will be assigning a scientific article related to the subject for the day. We will discuss these articles as to their relevance and merit. Participation in these discussions, class attendance, and general class participation will constitute the class participation grade. Any absence will result in a grade of "0" for that days participation grade.
Grades: Grades will be determined as follows:
Midterm Exam 25%

Paper ..20%
