D. Requirements for Credit:
Homework (15%):
Homework is due at the beginning of the period following the question
and answer time. Completion credit is given and the homework is returned the
next weeks session.
Attendance/participation
(5%): Will be covered in class rules.
Tests: (60%) There
will be four in-class chapter tests not to exceed 60 minutes each. A 3X5 student prepared card and calculator
are permitted for each test.
Final Exam (20%): The
final exam will be comprehensive. Note:
Completing the On-Line Course Evaluation and submitting a confirmation to the
instructor prior to the Final Exam will earn extra credit of 5 points on the
Final Exam.
Attendance: The roll
will be called at the beginning of each class and after the break. Students are
encouraged to be prompt and not to miss any class. In case of an emergency, make arrangements
with the instructor to cover the material. "Any student who misses 25% or
more of the regularly scheduled class meetings will receive a grade of F in the
course. There are no exceptions to this policy. A student's reason for absence
is irrelevant."
E. Methods for assessing outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, students are
expected to be able to:
1)
Perform
operations using rational expressions,
2)
Solve equations
involving rational expressions,
3)
Perform
operations and solve equations involving exponents and radicals,
4)
Perform
operations involving complex fractions,
5)
Solve quadratic
equations using factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula,
6)
Graph lines,
parabolas, circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas,
7)
Perform
operations involving functions, inverse functions, and variations,
8)
Work problems
using exponential functions,
9)
Evaluate
logarithms and solve logarithmic functions,
10) Work problems involving sequences and series,
11) Expand powers using the binomial theorem,
12) Think mathematically.
Behavioral Objectives: During this course, students will be expected
to work homework problems, interact during lecture with questions and answers,
do collaborative work on home work assignments, take the in-class tests, and
take the final exam.
F.
Supplementary Material: A scientific calculator is required (TI-36X) or
a graphing calculator (TI-83+ or TI 84+) is highly recommended.
For
additional help see the website: www.prenhall.com/angel
G.
Method of Instruction: The class will meet once a week for 11
weeks. The class will last four hours
and ten minutes each session with a fifteen minute break halfway through the
class. The lecture method will emphasize
applications and illustrative examples. Collaborative
learning will be used as part of home work.

WBU MATH 1304 CLASS RULES SUMMER 2008
1. Welcome to MATH 1304/Section SA01: it is my goal to make this a useful and encouraging experience.
2.
Bring your
textbook, mathematics binder, calculator, assignment book, paper, and pencil to
every class.
3.
You should be
in place, no later than 5 minutes before the class begins, ready for the
sessions daily activities. Please do
not cut this class
two consecutive absences may constitute an automatic failure
in the course.
4. All homework will be turned in at the beginning of the assigned class period unless the instructor gives direction otherwise. Please turn in each section H/W separately unless told otherwise by me or the syllabus.
5.
Homework
grades will be reduced 10 points for each week after the assigned pickup
date. No homework will be accepted
after the second week and the student will receive a grade of zero to be
averaged into the course homework grade.
6.
The first page
of the homework will have the students name, subject, and date in the upper
right corner in the following format:
Name
Subject
Date
7.
The title line
(the first horizontal line on the page) will have the chapter, section, and
problem numbers written on this line in the following format:
Chapter 6.1, pp. 388
391: 13,24,34,40,57,62,72,93,98,108,118
8.
All homework
will be done in pencil. Do NOT use ink on tests or homework in
this math class.
9.
On each
problem, other than word problems, write the original problem and show all
steps to your answer. Dont leave me to
assume you have the logic down, let me see it.
10.
Word problems:
Start with your known and unknown quantities, build the necessary relationship,
including neat sketches, if required.
Derive the necessary calculations for a final result and check it
against the details of the problem.
11.
Keep all
homework and tests in a two pocket folder, in chronological order with the
oldest material in front. This binder or
folder will be turned in the day of the final exam and the grade on this binder
will count as one test grade which will be averaged with the four chapter
tests.
12.
Homework
missed due to absences will be due the next week upon return from the
absence.
13.
Any exception
to these rules will be only at the discretion of the instructor. Remember, homework is a measure of your
skills development in mathematics; tests measure your skills mastery.
