Description: Perspectives, working
concepts, goals of social work practice, examination of casework, group work,
and community work.
Prerequistite: None.

Course
outcome competencies: Upon successful
completion of this course, each student will understand and be able to
describe:
· Define social welfare and social work
practice;
· Identify and perform beginning
professional social work skills;
· Understand the generalist perspective
of social work;
· Develop an understanding of social
work ethics;
· Discuss the various field of social
work and the underlying concepts and;
· Develop critical thinking in
analyzing social work.
Attendance
requirements: Any student who misses 25
percent or more (three absences of the regular scheduled class meetings will
receive a grade of F in the course. No
exceptions are made to this policy. Roll
will be taken each class period. If a
student is late and misses roll call, the student must notify the instructor at
break or after class to record attendance.
Otherwise the student will be counted absent. No correction of attendance records will be
made at subsequent classes.
Additional
attendance policies: Additionally,
students who leave class early will be counted absent for the entire
period. Each absence will be deducted
six points for each class.

Evaluation
Assignments: Papers are due on the date noted in the
syllabus. Papers turned in late will result in receiving a lower letter grade
for each day past the due date listed on the syllabus.
Critical
Thinking Questions will be assigned at the end of the class period. The answers will be due at the next class
meeting.
Presentence
Report: The student will given a case
scenario to formulate a fictional presentence report relating to the
assignment. The student will refer to
the format in the textbook as a guideline.
Three pages in length.
Social Worker
Paper: The student will be required to
interview a social worker of a social service agency in person. Three pages in length. The following points will be discussed in the
paper:

Mission
statement of the agency,
·
Goals
of the agency,
·
Client’s
referral to the agency and eligibility criteria required by the agency,,
·
Services
provided for the client by the agency,
·
Funding
sources of the agency,
·
Volunteer
opportunities in the agency,
·
Student’s
observation of social work practice
Social Work
Journal: Select a journal of social work
and evaluate the article with the following points:
·
Summarize
three major points in the article
·
Define
the terms in the social work article,
·
Analyze
the article’s social work practice using the problem solving approach by
identifying scriptural references and local (Bexar County) social service
agencies.
Paper should
be four pages in length with additional cover and reference page.
Instructor’s
policy on Academic dishonesty:
University students are expected to conduct themselves according to the
highest standards of academic honesty.
Academic misconduct includes dishonesty when completing an examination
or examination materials, forgery, or plagiarism. Plagiarism is the presentation of the work of
another as one’s own work. Disciplinary
actions for academic misconduct are the responsibility of the faculty member
assigned to the course. The faculty
member is charged with assessing the gravity of any case of academic dishonesty
and with giving sanctions to any student involved.
