Becoming a Teacher

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Course focuses on preparing the student for the State examination test in Professional Practices and Responsibilities. The student will develop skills in interviewing and researching various teaching opportunities.

 

RESOURCES:

Textbook: For EC-4 and 8-12: Nath, J. & Cohen, M. (2005).  Becoming an EC-4 or Middle School or High School Teacher in Texas. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth/Thompson Learning.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the educational philosophy behind the Texas professional licensing exam: Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR).
  2. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the PPR competencies at your level: EC-4, 4-8, 8-12.
  3. Understand when and how to obtain your teaching license.
  4. Know when and how to look for teaching positions.

 

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Qualifying to take your PPR licensing exam
  2. Completing weekly practice quizzes by using knowledge of competencies and TExES philosophy
  3. Completing weekly group work reviewing and solidifying competencies and the TExES philosophy

 


EVALUATION:

  1. Qualifying for appropriate PPR licensing exam (80% or higher on the practice test)
  2. Work on weekly TExES-like quizzes

 

PLAGIARISM POLICY:

Intellectual integrity and truthfulness are fundamental to scholarship.  Plagiarism is a form of cheating.  Plagiarism occurs when a student fails to give proper credit when information is either quoted or paraphrased.  Plagiarism takes place when you take credit for someone else’s work.  Plagiarism may result in an “F” in the course or your being expelled from the class or university.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Any student who misses 25% (3 classes) or more of the regularly scheduled class meetings will receive a grade of F for that course. Also, repeatedly arriving for class late may result in final grade reduction.

 

DISABILITIES:

Any student with a disabling condition who may require some special arrangement in order to meet course requirements should contact the instructor on the first day of class to make the necessary accommodations.
