DESCRIPTION: Practical management communications in today’s organizations; application of writing, verbal and nonverbal skills as they relate to management; holding productive meetings, conferences, and interviews; speaking effectively and developing useful organizational skills.

 

PREREQUISITE(s): ENGL 1301 and 1302 or consent of instructor

OUTCOME COMPETENCIES

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

·         Write clear and effective business communications in various forms

·         Give a professional oral presentation on a business topic

·         Communicate effectively across cultures

 

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION: 

 

            Examinations:             mid-term, and final – (100 points each)

  

            Writing Project:          Students will create a professional resume’, cover letter and thank you letter as if applying for a management position  (100 points)         

 

            Oral Presentation:      Students will present a 15 minute business-related topic (approved by instructor) to the class while wearing professional attire and using visual aids (100 points)

 

 

            Attendance and

            Participation:               25 points

 

GRADING:  A = 100 –90, B = 89-80, C= 79-70, D = 69-60, F = 59 and below

 

It is the student’s responsibility to insure all exams are taken.  If you cannot make a scheduled exam, you must notify the instructor in advance.  You will have one week (from the test night to the next scheduled class meeting) to take the makeup exam.  Makeup exams after one week will not be permitted and will result in a test grade of  0.  A copy of the test can be made available in the University office the day after the scheduled exam; however, the WBU office will only schedule makeup exams on Wednesdays.  It is up to the student to call and take the exam during the assigned WBU office hours.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  All students are expected to attend all classes.  When this is not possible, the student should notify the instructor in advance of the absence.  3 absences in one semester is cause for the student to receive an “F” in the course.  Attendance is a component of the course grade
