Upon
completion of this course the student should be able to:
• Define
management and the management process and explain the functions of management
in an organization.
• Discuss the
four major historical eras of management theory and distinguish two major
contributions made by each historical era.
• Define
organization culture and describe the seven dimensions of organization culture
• Describe
the two external environments and distinguish the impact each environment has
on management.
• Distinguish
between international management and
• Discuss the
concept of social responsibility and discuss the role of ethics within the
application of the management process.
• Outline the
steps in decision making and describe the three decision types.
• Define
planning and explain the utility of goals in planning in management.
• Diagram the
strategic management planning process and differentiate between corporate and
functional strategic plans.
• Describe
the application of planning tools in goal setting and planning.
• Define
communications and explain the nature of formal and informal communications
within an organization.
• Discuss the
functional role of human resource management in strategic planning and
organizing
• List and
describe techniques for reducing resistance of organizational members to change
and two techniques for reducing members stress to change.
14. Attendance Requirements: Attendance and Tardiness; Students are expected to attend each class meeting and remain for the entire class period. Failure to regularly attend class and participate fully will result in lowering of the final grade. Three absences (six for day classes) cause failure of the course.
Two absences (four in day classes) result in lowering of the final grade. Consistent tardiness, i.e., four late arrivals, or early departures are sufficient cause to lower the final grade. Students who arrive late for class are obligated to inform the instructor of their presence. Students not present when roll is taken will be counted absent. Roll will not be adjusted subsequent to class meetings.

Course Requirements and Grading Criteria: Participation includes personal
contribution to class discussion, taking adequate notes, and demonstrating
mastery of the subject through informed discussion.
Subject mastery will be demonstrated by successful performance on a
mid-term and final exam, informed discussion of Journal articles, and class
participation. Note: coming to class and
passing tests does not entitle students to a grade of “A.” Students must
demonstrate excellence in studentship and subject mastery to earn an “A.” Students are required to make arrangements
with the university to take an examination at a time other than the stipulated
testing date. If an exam is missed
because an unavoidable circumstance, normally students must take the exam no
later than the week following the date of the missed exam. Testing and testing delay
is only approved by the instructor.
Make-up tests are taken the WBU San Antonio Campus by arrangement.
Examinations: mid-semester, and final - (60% of the final
grade)
Research
Project: scholarly article on a specific
topic and (25% of the final grade) See attached Journal Article Analysis
Instruction for guidance and format. No
other format will be accepted.

JOURNAL
You're
obligated to read two peer Journal articles in an area of management of
interest to you. If you are unfamiliar with
a peer Journal, you may review an article from a credible professional
periodical. The articles cannot be from
a newspaper. Under no circumstance will
articles found on the internet be used unless approved by the first. Unapproved
internet articles will be graded a 0
Use of the Wayland On-Line Library is encouraged. The
following format is required:
1. A cover page is not required. Article reviews must be typed, double space, use font size 12, type style Times New Roman, and papers must have one-inch margin all around.
2. Heading: Cite the source of the article (Name the source, volume and edition number, and the page(s) the article appears on.). Journal articles used can be dated no earlier than the year 2005. The more recently dated the article the better.
3. Part-I: Summary of the article: Outline what the article says. A succinct summary of the article’s content and main points are required here. Stress key points and concepts that clarify what the article is about.
4. Part-II: Subject the article to an informed evaluation. Discuss your reaction to the article, i.e. discus your agreement or disagreement with the article’s content and conclusions. Explain your agreement or disagreement (it helps to clarify your conclusions if you cite theories or literature that support your position).
5. Finely, explain how this information is useful to you. Explain how you can apply the information, or its conclusions, to your work setting.
