13.  Course Outcome Competencies:

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

  • Define management and the management process and explain the functions of management in an organization.
  • Discuss the four major historical eras of management theory and distinguish two major contributions made by each historical era.
  • Define organization culture and describe the seven dimensions of organization culture
  • Describe the two external environments and distinguish the impact each environment has on management.
  • Distinguish between international management and U.S. management.
  • Discuss the concept of social responsibility and discuss the role of ethics within the application of the management process.
  • Outline the steps in decision making and describe the three decision types.
  • Define planning and explain the utility of goals in planning in management.

 

 

 

 

  • Diagram the strategic management planning process and differentiate between corporate and functional strategic plans.
  • Describe the application of planning tools in goal setting and planning.
  • Define communications and explain the nature of formal and informal communications within an organization.
  • Discuss the functional role of human resource management in strategic planning and organizing
  • List and describe techniques for reducing resistance of organizational members to change and two techniques for reducing members stress to change.
  • Define group and team development. 
  • Understand motivational and leadership theories.

 

14.  Attendance Requirements:  Students will make every effort to attend all class meetings.  If you must be absent for any legitimate reason; i.e., you are providentially hindered due to work requirements, illness or emergency—you must contact the instructor and advise/explain.  The instructor will determine a makeup plan for missed class work.  Three absences (25% of the 11-week period) will constitute failure.  If you anticipate excessive absences, you should consider withdrawal according to WBU’s policy.  Three tardies/early departures may equal one absence.  An unexcused absence/tardiness reduces grade average.

Examinations/Quizzes:  - Mid-Term Exam (22 Sep) / Final Exam (27 Oct) = 40% of final grade (20% each)

                                    - Two quizzes (one each prior to mid-term and final) = 10% of final grade (5% each)

1st Report (oral)             - Oral presentation (1 Sep; 5 minutes) = 5% of final grade; provide outline prior

2nd Report (written)       - Written presentation (13 Oct; 8-10 pp/dbl sp; APA format) = 20% of final grade

Team Project                - Course related/TBD on size of class (13, 20 Oct; 10-12 minutes) = 15% of grade

Attendance                   - 5% of final grade (tardies/early departures/absences counted; see attendance requirements)

Participation and

Teacher Subjectivity      - 5% of final grade (see Statements of Understanding) 

 

Grading:  100-90 (A); 89-80 (B); 79-70 (C); 69-60 (D); 59-below (F).

Statements of Understanding:

This class will adhere to zero tolerance for using someone else’s work as your own.  It will result in course failure if written or verbal presentations are plagiarized.  Any research paper is subject to comparison with Turnitin.com at the discretion of the instructor.  

 

Students are responsible for reading, understanding, obeying, and respecting all academic policies.  Added emphasis will be placed upon academic progress policies appearing in the WBU Academic Catalog applicable to their curriculum and/or program of study.

 

Class participation is a key requirement to succeed.  Student participation in discussions enriches each one’s knowledge and appreciation of the principles of management and how they can be applied to the work environment.  Opportunities to participate include case studies, Q&A, reading assignments, and timely work turned in by due date.  Untimely work will receive a markdown in points at the instructor’s discretion.   

 

There may be opportunities for bonus points on exams and extra credit for class work at the discretion of the instructor.
