D.    Requirements for Credit: 

Class work: (10%) Done in class as part of collaborative learning. Turned in at exams.

Homework (10%):  Homework is due at the beginning of the period following the question and answer time. Completion credit is given and the homework is returned after the break.

Quizzes: (20%)  There will be three in-class quizzes.

Exams (60%):  There will be two major exams, one during class 6 and one during class 11.  The final exam will be comprehensive. The midterm is 25% and the final exam is 35%. Note: Completing the On-Line Course Evaluation and submitting a confirmation to the instructor prior to the Final Exam will earn extra credit of 5 points on the Final Exam.

 

Attendance: “Students enrolled at one of the university’s external campuses should make every effort to attend all class meetings. All absences must be explained to the instructor, who will then determine whether the omitted work may be made up. When a student reaches that number of absences considered by the instructor to be excessive, the instructor will so advise the student and file an unsatisfactory progress report with the executive director/campus dean. Any student who misses 25% or more of the regularly scheduled class meetings may receive a grade of F in the course. Additional attendance policies for each course, as defined by the instructor in the course syllabus, are considered a part of the university’s attendance policy. E. Methods for assessing outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to

1)      perform operations using rational expressions,

2)      solve equations involving rational expressions,

3)      perform operations and solve equations involving exponents and radicals,

4)      perform operations involving complex fractions,

5)      solve quadratic equations using factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula,

6)      graph lines, parabolas, circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas,

7)      perform operations involving functions, inverse functions, and variations,

8)      work problems using exponential functions,

9)      evaluate logarithms and solve logarithmic functions,

10)  work problems involving sequences and series,

11) expand powers using the binomial theorem,

12) think mathematically.

Behavioral Objectives:  During this course, students will be expected to work homework problems, interact during lecture with questions and answers, do collaborative work on classwork assignments, take the in-class quizzes, and take two major exams.

G. Method of Instruction:  The class will meet once a week for 11 weeks.  The class will last four hours and ten minutes each session with a fifteen minute break halfway through the class.  The lecture method will be used with the Socratic Method being the primary emphasis. Collaborative learning will be used as part of class work.
