COURSE OBJECTIVE:

At the conclusion of the course, each student is able to:

1. Explain the EMS system and the citizen responder’s role within the system
2. Describe risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease and how to minimize them
3. Identify breathing emergencies, demonstrate rescue breathing and first aid for choking
4. Describe the symptoms of shock and how to minimize its effects
5. Know how and when to move an emergency victim
6. Identify life threatening bleeding and demonstrate how to control it
7. Identify signs of cardiac arrest and demonstrate cardiopulmonary resuscitation
8. Understand the nature of soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries and their care
9. Identify the symptoms of sudden illness and describe adequate care

COURSE PROCESSES:

The course is the standardized Red Cross training course for Adult CPR and First Aid

Certification. The theoretical and practical basis of each topic will be presented

during lecture. The laboratory component will consist of group practice on the major

techniques involved in first aid and CPR. Students will be expected to read all assigned

materials in preparation for class and participate fully in all class activities.

COURSE ADMINISTARION:

1. Class Preparation:

- During each class session, a particular text topic will be discussed; each student is to have read the topic prior to the class session.

- It is in YOUR best interest to stay current with chapter readings.

2. Participation & Assignment Policies:

- Attendance at lectures and class activities is mandatory.

- Any student who misses 25% or more of the regularly scheduled class meeting will receive an “F” grade.

- Please DO NOT miss class on scheduled exam dates. If for any foreseen reason you will not be able to make an exam date please contact the instructor prior to the class session.

- Please speak with the instructor individually regarding any specific concerns you feel may affect your attendance, classroom participation or FINAL GRADE.

3. Make-up of Assignments: Unless there’s a dire medical emergency make-up test

Will Not be arranged. To make up an exam, a valid written medical excuse must be

presented and the exam must be taken prior to the next class meeting. Under any

circumstances a 5 pt reduction in the exam score will be assessed for each day after

which the exam remains incomplete. Due to equipment availability and preparation

demands of CPR and First Aid testing, students MUST BE PRESENT on testing

days in order to be eligible for Red Cross Certification. These testing sessions cannot

be made up.

4. Student Evaluation:

- The student’s final course grade is based on the following weighted criteria:

A. Mid Term = 100

B. Field Report = 30

C. 2-Practical Evaluation (50 and 20 points = 70 total)

D. Final Exam = 90

- A= 290-263

- B= 262-237

- C= 236-210

- D= 209-184

- F= 183 and below

5. Assignments:

a. Students will be administered a Mid Term and Final Exam IAW the American Red Cross Association (ARC). The Mid-term Exam will cover Chapters 1-7 (Includes ARC CPR items); the Final Exam will cover Chapters 8-24 (Includes ARC First Aid items).

b. The Practical Evaluation will consist of each student demonstrating the ability to administer CPR and First Aid using manikin along with other ARC equipment.

c. The Field Report will require each student to visit a Hospital, Emergency Room, Health Clinic or any Emergency Treatment Facility. Detailed information on the project will be presented in class.

d. Field Experience, students may volunteer a minimum of two hours at the San Antonio chapter of the ARC at any time during the term. With an acknowledge letter, which must be returned to the instructor prior to the last classroom session, the student will receive 25 Additional Points toward their final grade. * Anyone who donates Blood during this course can receive 10 Bonus points.
